VMWare noob

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

i've been raging an all out campaign with my sisters to change our OS from XP Pro to Linux Mint or Ubuntu 8.04 for the longest time now. heck, i even tried to make a dual boot for both OSes so our computer can "serve 2 masters" so to speak. but then my sisters did an OSRI (OS Re-Install) a CLEAN installation so all the files i have downloaded via ubuntu that's *cough* not accessible via the Windows environment were all, er, deleted along with all the other data. lol! so i have resolved never to install 2 OSes ever. (i guess i really do need to buy myself another laptop, eh?)

so, i'm going to try to introduce VMWare in layman's term or at least, as user-friendly as possible. If you guys see any errors, please do let me know coz i'm kinda new on this VMWare thing. i'll also provide screenshots once i actually do it on my pc hopefully by tonight or early last week.

sounds ambitious? yeah, very. i've read about VMWare but have not really seriously tried it out. the best description i can come up with is that: VMWare is like a virtual machine that enables your pc to run multiple OSes. It's like an emulator only this software does not follow an instruction set (i.e. goto..., etc.) for your hardwares. so it means VMWare will have the drivers for certain devices like USBs therefore, you no longer have to download drivers yourself if you're running on a virtual host like this one. (special thanks for Wikipedia for explaining it to me... hehe)

i think i'll just post another entry on VMWare installation in the near future to fully expound on it and so i can document it for MY OWN reference. ^__^

I finally got around to sitting in my computer to post an update on my  post. Here's what I did to make it work.

1. Let's check on the External Hard Drive's hardware connection for possible points of failure by making sure the power supply is plugged on and its properly attached to your HD.

2. Then Make sure the USB is plugged on a working port. If it's not on a working port, then there you have it, change switch the USB to a working port and see if that fixes the problem.

3. If not, check if the power light is ON.

Now if you already see the drive in Computer Management Area but still no drive is assigned, then follow these steps:

1. Right-Click on your My Computer and choose "Manage". like so:

Ext HD Troubleshooting 1.bmp

2. If you have already formatted your HD just skip to the step 3. Right-Click on Disk Management on the next window, then Left-Click on "Format..." to do a Quick Format. It'll only take a few minutes at most then move onto the next step.

3. Left-Click on the Disk where you can see your new HD and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."

add a drive to new hd.bmp

4. Then you click on "Add..." which in turn will pop up another window.

5. Place a mark on the radio button labeled "Assign the following drive letter" and click OK.
Note: Make sure to choose an unassigned drive letter otherwise it'll not be accepted.

And there you have it! Your New Hard Drive's now recognised. :)

Disclaimer: this is just one of the possible way to make your computer recognise your new Hard Drive and is in no way the only solution.
I bought a new Western Digital 80GB SATA HDD and also an enclosure to go with it so i can transfer files, etc from my work computer to my home computer. I tried it out at work and my computer was able to detect the thing but a drive was not assigned to it. I'm now in our training room so I'll try to restart my pc later and see if it was detected in BIOS or something...
